Natural Cracks vs. Unnatural Cracks
Small surface cracks, long thin cracks, and movement around knots are natural characteristics of solid wood, developing over time as the wood adjusts to its environment. These are not imperfections, but rather part of what makes your piece unique. Please note: tables with natural cracks cannot be returned outside of our 14-day return policy.
Preventing Natural Cracks
To help minimize cracks, apply wood-specific mineral oil every 3 months. This helps maintain the wood's moisture content, which can reduce the likelihood of cracking. However, this is not a complete solution, and moisture balance must be monitored.
General Care Tips
- Dust regularly with a microfiber cloth to prevent dust buildup, which can lead to scratches. Avoid dry dusting, as this can scratch the wood surface.
- Clean using a soft cloth with a mild soap solution or wood oil. Always blot spills immediately with an absorbent cloth to prevent liquid from penetrating the wood.
- Oil your table with mineral oil (our recommended scratch remover is a great option) every few months, or more frequently during drier winter months, to help maintain moisture levels in the wood and prevent cracking.
Avoid High-Heat Areas
Extreme temperatures can be very damaging to natural wood. Do not place your table near radiators, heaters, or in direct sunlight. Wood exposed to high heat can dry out, warp, and crack. Rapid changes in temperature can cause the wood to expand and contract, which may lead to splitting or warping. If your table is near a window, consider using curtains or blinds to reduce direct sunlight exposure, or relocate the table to a more stable, temperature-controlled area.
Moisture Damage
Wood is highly sensitive to moisture fluctuations, and exposure to excess moisture or dry conditions can lead to permanent damage:
- Too Much Moisture: If the wood absorbs too much moisture from spills or high humidity, it can swell, warp, or even develop mold. Always wipe up spills immediately with a dry, absorbent cloth to prevent water damage. Avoid placing items like vases or cups directly on the wood without a coaster.
- Too Little Moisture: If the air in your home is too dry, especially in winter, the wood may lose its moisture content, leading to cracking. To help prevent this, apply mineral oil every few months and consider using a humidifier in your home to keep humidity levels consistent.
Humidity Levels
To maintain the wood’s integrity, try to keep your room’s humidity between 40-45%. Lower humidity levels can cause the wood to dry out and crack, while higher humidity can cause it to swell and warp. A consistent humidity level is key to ensuring the longevity of your natural wood furniture.
Due to the natural curves and variations of wood, dimensions, thickness, and shape may slightly vary. These unique imperfections make each table one-of-a-kind, and contribute to its beauty and authenticity.
